Genre: Drama
Runtime: 110 Minutes
Colour: Colour
Year: 1984
Country: West Germany
Language: German

Plot: Albi, Franz and Tayfun ease through their small-town days, content to work at the garage, pick up girls and ride a bike. A little bit of freedom. When the new boss throws them out, they have to resort to new means to pay for the drinks, cigarettes and beloved motorcycles: betting, racing, crash-driving, car theft. But the tougher the going gets, the more they stick together. The highlight of this movie is a race between a Katana 1100 and a 911 Porsche Carrera. (N.B. Treffer translated from German means 'Hit'!)

Director Dominik Graf follows the undistinguished existence of three young small-town mechanics who just drift from day to day and don't expect too much in life, except their beloved bikes, maybe a girl now and then and a few good buddies to drink and laugh with. When they become unemployed and turn to a scrupulous banker for help, the going gets tougher every day. But Albi, Franz and Tayfun always stick together and never change their easy-going outlook on life, right down to the sudden and tragic finale.
"Treffer" is an uncompromisingly realistic and unpolished youth film, portraying the drowsy day-to-day agony of German twenty-something workmen, the unbreakable frailty of age-old friendships, the horror when suddenly novelties in life run out, the longing for a bit of freedom. There are no unconventional camera angles, no fancy special effects, no theatrical over-acting. Every love affair and every fistfight is down-to-earth, unspectacular yet deeply atmospheric.
With its artless realism, "Treffer" perfectly recreates a very believable narrow world. Great slice-of-life performances by Max Wigger, Dietmar Bär, Barbara Rudnik and Tayfun Bademsoy, aided by Graf's inspired plain directing.
"Treffer" has funny moments without Hollywoodist jokes, tragedy without pathos, depth without artificiality. While not a true masterpiece due to the limited conceptual horizon, it is one of the very finest German youth films ever made, and ranks among the best in any language.
